1200 Participants at the 4th Sofia Pride
19 June 2011

Sofia Pride was weld on 18 June 2011. About 1200 participants gathered tradiotionally on the Bridge of Lovers close to the National Palace of Culture on Saturday afternoon. The march that was lead by truck with DJs and dancers passed along Vassil Levski Blvd and ended up by the Monument of the Soviet Army. A large number of policemen and gendermerie guarded the parade and the taxes paid for it were the highest part of the budget of the event. This edition was without any provocations or clashes. The previously announced anti-gay marc of the nationalists was not held at all. After the end of the event unknown young men attacked and stroke five activists of the parade.

The motto of the parade tha was announced in the very last moment was "5%". According to the organizers that is the number of gays, lesbians, bisexuals and transsexuals in Bulgaria, i.e. totally about 350 000 people. And somehow hidden and not well communicated appeal was all those 350 000 to come out.

The parade received traditioanally the support of West European embassies, Bulgarian Socialist Youth. Georgi Kadiev, candidate for maor of Sofia of Bulgarian Socialist Party, expressed his support to the parade with official declaration and being currently a member of the Municipal Council tried to convince Greater Sofia Municipality to become co-organizer of the event. Normally after the regular homophobic statements of the leader of GERB and Prime-minister Boyko Borisov the mayor Fandakova rejected such support. Kadiev attented the start of the parade itself but after all his support became too confusing as he answered to journalists that he definately does not support same-sex marriage and adoption of children by same-sex pairs.
